Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2011 08:41:54 -0800 (PST) Dear Commissioner Schnell, My wife wanted to express our thanks for the support and concern you have had for the black walnut trees near the southwest corner of the Nelson Meadows Subdivision, which borders our property at 5800 Carpenter Street. We thought that the discussions you led in the 2006 hearings resulted in recommendations and Tree Protection requirements that would minimize the effects to the root zones of these beautiful trees that we are lucky enough to care for and enjoy every day. The Developer's proposal to modify the Subdivision Improvement Agreement seems to have discarded the safeguards to protect the root zones and now wants to place the construction fence on the property line, rather than 15 feet north of the property line, as previously specified. We agree with the Morton Arboretum's and the Village's previous assessments that the previously requirements are necessary to minimize construction damage to our trees, specifically, the critical root zones near the property line, during construction. We love our neighborhood and really believe that things like our walnut trees are a characteristic piece of what makes our block special. We would like to keep it that way for us and our neighbors. We hope at the Village Council meeting this evening that you will continue to insist that the construction fencing be placed 15 feet north of the property line, on the north edge of the existing transit easement. Thank you for your support, Jim and Gail Mazer |
